Daylilies are the perfect perennial flowers. They thrive on neglect, and with a little planning, they reward the gardener with a generous season of bloom. "Hemerocallis" means "beauty for a day." Although each individual bloom lasts but a single day, a mature plant will have multiple scapes (flower stalks) with 10 to 35 blooms per scape, providing an exceptionally long season of bloom for a perennial.
They do not perform well as cut flowers.
Daylilies can be planted in early spring until frost. In reality, they can be planted anytime the ground is not frozen. The best times to plant is early spring or early fall, but they can even be planted in the heat of mid-summer.
Daylilies are sun-loving plants, but they will also bloom rather well in partial shade. Four to six hours or more of sun is preferred but in our Zone 6 they have done well in filtered light in shaded areas. They do not like full shade.
Daylilies thrive in a variety of soil conditions with a pH of 6-7. Adding compost, rotted leaves or wood chips is beneficial, but not necessary.
In a mixed perennial border allow a circle of 16-18 inches in diameter if the daylily will be divided and replanted in 3-5 years. If you expect to leave the clump intact for 5-10 years it will need 18-24 inches or more.
Daylilies are shipped as bareroot plants. The process to prepare them for shipping is labor intensive. First, we dig the daylily, Then, we soak it for 4-6 hours in plain water to soften the soil. Next, we hose off all dirt. Then, we soak the daylily again in a bleach solution for 15-30 minutes, hosing the daylily once more afterward. Once clean, the daylily must be air dried for 24-48 hours before it can be wrapped and shipped.
When purchasing daylilies from our farm, you will receive a generous clump of 5-6 scapes that have been field grown.
We keep our prices low at $10, $20 or $30 per clump. The price is not indicative of size, but rather the characteristics of the bloom.
Because they have never spent their lives restricted to a pot or greenhouse, field grown daylilies will be stronger and more vigorous than daylilies purchased from a nursery/big box store. They have endured all weather extremes and have built up the hardiness and adaptability to thrive in your landscape.
